Non-Fiction Essays: Tips

Updated: Jul 18, 2020

Useful Tips:

1. Don't overuse tags!

EXAMPLE:

"Hey, how are you?" asked Betty.

"I'm okay..." muttered Sam

"Just okay?" questioned Betty.

"Yeah," replied Sam.

Don't overuse tags like this. Not only is it unnecessary but it's not professional. In a dialogue between two people, it's definitely easy to not use these tags. For example: "Want some bread?" Sam whispered to Betty.

"No, thanks. Why'd you ask?"

"Just seemed you'd like some bread..."

Even without tags, it's pretty clear who's talking.

2. If you can't imagine yourself dropping the mic after the final sentence of your essay... Your conclusion needs to be stronger.

3. To make sure your content can give off a powerful impact, try asking yourself, "What surprises you the most about the subject?"

I find that when I get stuck on a essay, I resort to including unnecessary facts and information... Our goal should be to hook the reader and to get the reader finishing the essay with information that she could remember and use. Whatever you find interesting about the topic, write it down! It's guaranteed to hook the reader and create an essay you'll be proud of.

4. When researching, don't plagiarise the site word for word.

What should be the difference between you and countless other essays being written about the subject online? It should be that your essay is a combination of all these essays. If you copy word for word, whats stopping other people from going to other essays?

Furthermore, I dont blame you for plagiarising. So, the real question is, how do we avoid plagiarising?

Firstly, when you research try to soak up all the information first. Don't take notes, just read everything you can find on the topic. Later, without looking at the sites, jot down everything you remember in your own words. You'd be surprised when you see how much you were able to soak up! And for number facts, you're allowed to copy down the number, not the entire sentence.

The best sources to stop plagiarising are YouTube videos.

5. USE A THESAURUS

I cannot stress how useful this is. Whenever you feel your word choice could use some tweaking, go to a thesaurus when you're in the editing stage. If you use the words,'Like' too much in your writing, then go to a thesaurus. A thesaurus is the perfect place to look for stronger synonyms to your words.

THATS IT! In conclusion, essays are often dreaded and seen as something boring to read and write. In my experience, these tips have added a little more spice to essays. Feel free to do some more thorough research on this topic if you need some more tips!
